A Room With A View !!!

Vrijthof Square
After a nightmare of a trip, starting with the plane breaking down at her home airport, Sue finally arrived in Holland and was met by Betty in Amsterdam, from there it was onward bound, down to Maastricht ...
Just a note to say we're having a lot of fun!! Still on the tired side ... Some trucks pulled in last night and it looks like they're going to be putting the fencing up today. Last year they had the stage half done by Sunday afternoon, so I expect that they'll get going on it all any time here now ... watch the Webcam ... Sue and Betty.
Violinist for André Rieu, Breaks His Leg ...
June 27 : 2009 "De Limburger" By Franks Buschman
The Maastricht city carillon player Frank Steijns, did forego the American Tour with André Rieu in favor of the European Carillon Festival. And now he is at home with a broken fibula.
For the past fifteen years he has been climbing up in the church towers, including the Saint Servaas basilica in Maastricht. He has climbed thousands and thousands of steps, sometimes through narrow passages into the crest of the churches. Never did anything go amiss.
But, in the transportation of his mobile carillon from Maastricht to Weert on Wednesday, something did go amiss. Right there in the street, in a very insignificant manner, Steijns, (city carillon player for Maastricht-St Servaas and city hall, Weert and Heerlen's St.Pancratius church) and since 1994, violinist in André Rieu's Orchestra, had just loaded his portable carillon into a small truck. Six frames each of 200 kilos (440lbs) with 41 bronze bells.
"There is a specific way in which you can safely load them. Everything went just fine again this time. Everything was loaded and I jumped off the tailgate. I landed wrong." With the fall he also scraped his nose and chin. A passerby called the doctor who arrived shortly on the scene. Steijns could not be admitted to the hospital in Maastricht right away, so he decided to drive on to Weert.
"I drive an automatic, so I did not need to use my left leg. I thought that I had severely twisted my ankle, and it would be alright. Above all, I definitely wanted to go to Weert so I would not miss the first day of the Eurocarillon Festival". After all, he is the head man of the festival organization. "I had to let the tour through America with André Rieu go by the wayside. I wanted to experience this Carillon Festival where players from all over Europe will be attending. We have a beautiful program with performances in squares and churches in Maastricht, Weert, Heerlen, Achen, Hasselt and Neerpelt."
But the X-ray in the St. Jans Gasthuis (hospital) in Weert showed that Steijns had broken his leg (fibula) just above his left ankle and that same evening he underwent surgery. Also that evening he spent a lot of time on his laptop changing the programs of the festivities and asking other carillon players to substitute his performances.
"Rieu, who was one of the first to send me a text message from Las Vegas, always says: "The show must go on", and so it must. I do not want the festival public to notice that I myself will not be able to perform for a while. They should be able to just enjoy the other carillon players."

ANDRE RIEU ~ A CONCERT LIKE NO OTHER! Two hour and forty-five minute set has audience cheering for more!
Vancouver Canada June 18, 2009: What made the concert work so well was Rieu’s obvious passion and love for the music he makes. His orchestra is top notch and all its members seem to share his enthusiasm for their craft, expressing a genuine enjoyment that would be impossible to fake. They played with such expertise that it was impossible to not be impressed with the calibre of the musicianship.

WOW !! What a night we had. Before the concert started, we took to our seats, which were up on the side looking down to the stage, we could see everything, including Alice handing out her flags to everyone down on the floor.
I waved my Aussie flag and Alice spotted us, and made a mad dash up to our seats and handed Jeff and I our own little flags. At that moment, André & the JSO made their entrance to 76 Trombones, so she made another mad dash down the stairs to her seat. Always a stirring moment when that music starts, I had goose bumps and a tear in my eye. I was in my element.
It was the start of a fantastic concert as usual, but I became so mesmerized, I can't remember half of the pieces, but there were a lot of the ones we all know and love, such as Gold & Silver, Blue Danube, Clog dance and the party piece, Espana Cani [bull], Doll song [Carla], Song of Volga, which made me cry. There where lot's of others including the encores which gets everyone going.
André was fantastic and very relaxed, but I thought he looked tired as they only arrived that morning or late the night before. What a great entertainer he is, his facial expressions were fantastic, just gorgeous and a lot more than usual, he really teased the dancers in the Blue Danube. I thought the audience were very quiet to start with, but once they got into the swing of things they really let go. All in all it was a fantastic concert and as usual André & the JSO excelled, BRILLIANT ...

Kay writes ...Is there anything left to say? I think I’ve run out of adjectives. Each concert I see I think is the best one so far…until the next one. What made this one so special is that we (daughter Jennifer and I) met John & Bobbie de Jong for an early dinner prior to the concert and were able to visit with them both before and after the concert. They know many of the orchestra members and singers so they introduced to us some of them.
We met and talked to Franco and Gary before the concert, then waited by the busses after the concert and watched them all file out of the venue, a few at a time. Gary, Franco, Bela, Vincenzo and Mirusia all came over to talk to us and several others waved and said hello. This was very exciting for Jennifer and me since we had never met any of them before. They’re all such lovely, normal, down-to-earth people. We even saw André walk to the bus. He was preoccupied and speaking with someone as he was walking so he didn’t come over to us, but he did look our way, nod and, I think I heard him say hello. I almost missed him. Jennifer had to nudge me saying “Mom…Mom…it’s André!”
Tomorrow is the Fresno concert. Ten of us are meeting for a late lunch before the concert. Will this one be even better?? My feet won’t be touching the ground until long after Maastricht!
André Rieu Gives Grandmother a $2,500 Violin

Strings Attached To a Gift From Andre Rieu
UPDATE WITH VIDEO AND PHOTOS!
CRANEBROOK grandmother Kate Young hasn't picked up a violin for 35 years. She was forced to sell the one she played as a child when her husband Jay lost his job in the '80s. That's where classical music sensation Andre Rieu came in.
Click on the link below to read the newest article on it and also a nice video with André talking about it, PLUS his phone call he made from San Francisco to Kate Young.
June 17 : 2009 9NEWS Australia
Dutch Maestro André Rieu has made an Australian grandmother's day, giving her an expensive European Violin.
Sydney woman Kate Young brought the top-selling artist to tears last month when she wrote to 2GB's Alan Jones requesting he pass on her thanks to Rieu for his beautiful music.
Young's childhood ambition had been to become a concert violinist, but tough economic times and the loss of her husband's job forced her to sell her much-loved violin more than 20 years ago.
Rieu was so touched by her story that he decided to replace the violin she had to give up. "I have tears in my eyes. Having to sell your violin to buy things for your kids? I am giving this lady a violin," Rieu told Jones.
Rieu personally selected a $2,500 Otto Jos Klier violin made from aged Bosnian maple and Austrian mountain spruce and sent it to her as a gift. He also promised to check up on her progress when he returns to Australia for a string of concerts in October.
"I only hope that this brings you happiness and joy, no-one should be without music," Rieu told Young over the phone from the US.
Alice’s novel: André and Friends in Vancouver ...
June 14 : 2009
Jeff, (Mr Ed.) Alice's Parents, Mrs Ed. (Edwina) and Beate
To rewind the story a little bit, I bought my tickets once they’re released last October. Several months ago Mrs. Ed (it’s a nick name of Edwina) from Australia said she’d be coming to Vancouver with her husband. We finally met for the first time Apr 30, and I got an extra big hug from Jann. The couple was off to Alaska for 35 days.
June 12, the concert day
We got there at 7pm and checked out the “boutique” first. I bought a 30th anniversary T-shirt and Tour books. We’re on the floor and had seats in Row 15. As soon as we got to our seats, I needed to find someone to receive my “André souvenirs”: the stamps, the 3 puppies, and a few more gifts. I worked for some gala concerts before at the same venue so I knew my way quite well. I walked towards the backstage area….and guess who I first talked to??? Mr. Bodyguard Johann!! He kindly helped me bring all the gifts to André and when I later talked to him again, “Are they real stamps? How is that possible?” he asked. (Yep! Those are real stamps, Johann, they can be used as domestic postage). I’ll just say Johann is a very nice and helpful guy, but I won’t say much more, otherwise, this poor guy needs his own bodyguard pretty soon. (THANK YOU, JOHANN!!) Several fans came over to say hello. Cindie, whom I first met in Toronto, brought along 5 of her 8 children (did I get it right, Cindie?). What a potential musical family! That familiar face from Germany came over as well, so we took a picture. When Beate told me she’s going back to Germany the next day, I thought “What? You’re here just for the concert? WHOW” You fans are amazing!!

TNT Post to Bring 225,000 Stamps on The Market In Mid July Bearing The Likeness of The Maastricht 'Stand Alone Violinist' Andre Rieu
MAASTRICHT (UPDATE on André Rieu Stamps) TNT Post (Principal mail provider in the Netherlands)
There will be nine different images on the stamps of the famous violinist and the stamps can only be purchased in books of nine. The stamps are issued in conjunction with Rieu's thirtieth jubilee year of being on stage.
TNT Post does this in cooperation with the organization "Foundation Helps Largest Family of the Netherlands", and part of the proceeds will go to charities.
TNT Post also divulged that they have plans to issue stamps of another known Maastricht citizen. Who that person is, can currently not be revealed, a spokesperson said. Nor whether this Maastricht citizen is still alive or dead.
Note For those of you going to Maastricht who have been asking about purchasing the stamps ... there is a post office right on the Vrijthof just a few doors down from the DuCasque Hotel. It's a small, really nice Post Office and very modern inside. I'm sure they are going to be VERY busy with all of us on the morning of the 13th!! But my guess is that they're expecting that.

André Rieu Admitted To The Order of Musketeers
June 4 : 2009 Article : The Limburger Photographs: Ineke, The Limburger, Andrerieu.com
Waltz King ~ Orchestra Leader Dreams of Performing Beneath Eiffel Tower
From now on, André Rieu will go through life as Musketeer d'Armagnac. The Maastricht citizen was appointed by the French leader of the order "La Compagnie".
It was not coincidental that the ceremony took place in Rieu's Castle, de Torentjes, at the base of the St. Petersberg. Charles de Batz-Castelmore, better known as the fourth musketeer d'Artagnan, enjoyed here on 25 June 1673 his last breakfast, just before he breathed his last during a battle near the Tongerse gate.
André Rieu Admitted To The Order of Musketeers In his acceptance speech, André pointed out the historical importance of his kitchen, which yesterday was filled to the brim with a camera crew from ZDF(German TV)
As Musketeer d'Armagnac, Rieu is expected, amongst others, to contribute to the culture of the Cascogne (a region in France). Rieu, in turn, hopes that the good contacts with France willhelp to fulfill a big wish: to do a huge performance
under the Eiffel Tower in the heart of Paris, similar to the concerts in front of the Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna. Rieu, who will perform in France after the summer holidays, has sent letters to the Mayor of Paris and the Minister of Culture, but has not yet received permission. The waltz king was not the only Dutchman who was admitted to the Company of Musketeers yesterday.
The head of La Company, a descendant of D'Artagnan, came over especially for this occasion, and also welcomed into the ranks, journalist and program maker Jo Cortenraedt, lawyer Fernand Triple, writer Han Bergh, confectionery manufacturer Bernd Postma and sculptor Alexander Taratynov (known for The Night Watch and the statue of D'Artagnan in Maastricht). Worldwide there are about three thousand Musketeers d'Armagnac, including Prince Albert of Monaco. The Dutch squadron is commanded by Camille Oostwegel, Honorary Consul of France.

André Rieu wants to apologise ...

"Crying on stage is not done. But I couldn't help myself"
After three record breaking nights at Docklands last year, Rieu did the unthinkable ... He Cried.
"I'm so ashamed," Rieu says. "I'm a professional. Crying on stage is not done. But I couldn't help myself." It happened as he performed 'Waltzing Matilda' during his third Melbourne show."Firstly, it's a magnificent, beautiful song that always touches me," he says. "Secondly, I worked very hard to put together a show for my Australian fans. It was the biggest stage on earth, so, for me, it was a big risk. But it worked. "There were 38,000 people in front of me, enjoying the concert, smiling. It was all too much for me."

Dressmaker has stars in her sights ...
A SMALL Ascot Vale dress shop is making its mark on a global scale. Leiela Ladies Evening Wear in Union Road is being sought out by stars and celebrities keen to don their gowns on the red carpet.
The latest identity to wear Leiela's wares is Andre Rieu's lead soprano Mirusia Louwerse.
On a global tour with Rieu - the world's most famous violinist, conductor and composer - Louwerse and her Universal Music management selected a sparkling sequined gown for appearances in Sydney and have since bought the dress so she can wow audiences around the world in the stunning evening number.
Dressmaker Lucy Laurita, who has owned the shop for four years, said she was thrilled the big name had picked one of her creations. "This is what I've always aimed for - It's been a wish of mine to do this and it's paying off."
Ascot Vale is an inner Western Suburb of Melbourne and has come a long way from it's humble beginnings, these days you find this charming area filled with Edwardian homes restored beautifully and faithfully to their original elegance.

André Rieu and the Vegemite Experience ...
May 12` : 2009 By Margaret Sansom
André and Kerri-Anne
My Trip to the “Mornings with Kerri-Anne” Show
Emily and I spent a very enjoyable morning at Channel 9 Studios along with Ellen and Ivan. We watched the “Mornings with Kerri-Anne” show live. The first guest was André. He was so relaxed and SO close. We were in a wonderful position. Emily was thrilled as her sign was read out by André.
André spoke about meeting Marjorie and how important she is to him. He also told us that he plans to be in Australia every Mother’s Day. (I hope not.)
After the break Mirusia was introduced. She looked gorgeous in a watermelon coloured short dress. She was asked if she had taught André anything about Australia other than where Queensland was, and she replied that she had told him about Vegemite. When Kerri-Anne asked André about Vegemite he said he didn’t really know what vegemite on toast tasted like. Next thing out comes a plate with toast and Vegemite! Oh No! André was a good sport and took a bite. Then he pulled the most dreadful faces. A bottle of water was soon produced and he quickly took a gulp to wash it down! He offered the toast to Pierre but he declined. What a wimp!
MMMM INTERESTING !!!! I can now boast that I have sung with Mirusia. While André “ate” his toast Mirusia started singing the Vegemite song and we all joined her. It was so much fun.
When asked if he still had any dreams to fulfil, André said that he would like to perform a concert at the North Pole! Pierre asked if he could leave when he heard his dad’s suggestion.
So you’d better start saving now if you want to attend THAT concert.
After the filming was over André thanked us for coming and said it had been very enjoyable for him too. André, Mirusia, Pierre, Johann and ? left straight away so there was no personal interaction with them but it was still such a thrill to be so up close.
Thanks Emily for asking me to go with you, and thanks to Ellen and Ivan for the ride.
I have no photos of the show as we were scanned for cameras and phones, and had to hand them into security.
The Perfect Mother's Day with André Rieu ...
May 11` : 2009 By Angela Quy
This would have to be by far the best evening so far this year. The red carpet was rolled out and Richard Wilkins was being Richard Wilkins and interviewing amongst the crowd of early gatherers. Everyone was so obviously excited and anxious awaiting André’s arrival. Mother Superior’s flock was now in a good spot in the awaiting queue (thanks Margaret) and our camera flashes went off like fireworks as we captured that moment on each and everybody’s camera in turn. Good thing we were then called into the theatre before we all got lock jaw from our smiling poses. We collected our CDs and programs and entered the meet & greet room where champagne was flowing and canapés were graciously served.
Lo and behold, the first celebrity arrived and surprised us all. It was none other than our own lovely Jann. Once again, the camera flashes took a beating as we captured yet another unforgettable moment. Loads of chatting and laughing later, the Maestro himself arrived (Johann in tow) and the stunning Mirusia not far behind. André very obligingly signed each and every CD cover put in front of him. That right arm is “unstoppable”.
André Rieu's Evening on the Red Carpet ...
May10 : 2009 By Jann T. Photographs property of Jann T.
It's really been a busy day, a quick flight up to Sydney and straight out to the Entertainment Quarter for the showing of "Live in Australia" on the big screen along with the Meet & Greet in the Premier Lounge, followed by the "Red Carpet" interviews downstairs.
The telecast started off with Richard Wilkins interviewing Pierre who had just finished phoning his Mother to wish her Happy Mother's Day, now I must add this interview was happening down at the very end of the red carpet - a fair distance from where I was at the tail end of the "gung-ho" paparazzi when an unexpected visitor appeared on the red carpet ... a tiny terrier dog who simply appeared from nowhere !!!
I was so UTTERLY amused with the little doggie and busy laughing I forgot to take a pic, he walked that red carpet as if it had been laid out there just for him - it was sensational, of course now I regret not taking that pic. Seriously there is no way in the world you could get any producer or director to replicate the incident. He made his entrance just behind Richard and Pierre, calmly trotted the length of the carpet, right through the front door of the cinema complex, into the lobby as if he were the star of the day - IT WAS JUST THE BEST.
Next it was Mirusia's turn on the red carpet with Richard - and how lucky does a girl get ... the interviews were now being held right in front of me - I had "poll position". Mirusia was dressed for her red carpet debut in a low cut silver floor length evening gown and looked stunning, only to be outdone by her twinkling eyes.
And now it was André's turn, he was obviously enjoying himself and the rapport between him and Richard was evident as they fed off each other with the questions and answers. A competition had been run asking people to send in questions they would like to ask André and a handful were selected for the evening. The ONE question I remember clearly is when was his grandchild due !!! Andre answered that Marc's baby is due around the 5th July and he will definitely be home for the occasion. And - yes André had phoned Marjorie for Mother's Day. The interviews were great and Richard again displayed the aplomb he is well known for.
Now for the Premier Lounge, the Meet & Greet and Champagne. I was allowed up there as long as I remained discreet, not a problem I promised. Discretion disappeared out the window, the Lounge was filled with the NSW Friendship Group and several other readers from the website, it was more like turning up at a surprise party. Everyone was in great spirits and looking forward to meeting André and Mirusia, they were not disappointed.
Everyone attending the evening received a CD "The Andre Experience" with 12 tracks that was the single CD "Masterpieces" put out overseas in 2007 accompanied with a 20 page souvenir program.
Another sprint up the stairs to say goodbye to everyone settled comfortably into their seats for the rest of the show and another round of hugs. Reports have come in saying "You could clearly see André's face relax & delight in the audience response 5 minutes into the movie when he asked for a standing ovation for Pierre's achievement ... there goes one very proud Father and who can blame him !!!
Mercy dash back to the airport and home to Melbourne, it's been a long weekend with a lot of WOW factor. My thanks to Universal and Hoyts for the experience.
There are several more pic's to come and will be made available over the next few days.

Eastland filled quickly this morning as everyone turned up for the much anticipated appearance of André and Mirusia. It was fascinating to watch the comings and goings in the "media mosh pit" ... being on that side of the fence certainly gives you a different perspective !!! Although running half an hour late, he more than made up for it once he arrived. He made a striking figure in his suit and Mirusia was stunning in a short black fitted dress with hot pink strings to form short sleeves.
